Reading Techniques – Skimming Scanning<\/h3>\n

To understand the article you are reading, the first thing to do during this part of the test is to first browse the title and subtitle. If there are any images or graphics, browse through them to get a general idea of the entire article.<\/p>\n

Skimming is meant to help you grasp the main idea of each paragraph, because
\n\u2014if you don’t have time to read all the articles, and the questions are designed in this direction
\n\u2014you may not be able to understand many of the words
\n that appear in the text\u2014and some questions are specifically designed to test your skimming skills<\/p>\n

So when skimming, you usually only need to read the first sentence of each paragraph (for longer paragraphs, read the first two sentences). Because the first sentence is usually the main topic of the entire paragraph. The rest of the paragraph generally develops into other arguments. This part is something you don’t need to know when skimming. In the conclusion paragraph, the key point is likely the last sentence, so you may need to read the last sentence of the passage in the last paragraph. Marking the text while reading is a good way to help answer questions. In this article, you can underline key words or write the topic next to the paragraph; usually one or two words are enough. The key to successful skimming lies in how quickly you cover the entire text.<\/p>\n

When skimming and encountering an unfamiliar word or phrase, try to observe the words near and before to guess its meaning. For example, if an adjective precedes an unfamiliar word, it might be a noun; If it is an adverb before an unknown word, it might be a verb. You don’t need to know the exact meaning of the word; just grasp the general meaning of the paragraph. After skimming, you answer the question. At this point, you should underline the keywords in the question and then refer to the previously drawn lines or the marker words to find the answer. However, the keywords in the question will not always be the same as in this text; you should consider other synonyms.<\/big><\/span><\/p>\n

Writing Test Part 1: Describe graphical information<\/big><\/span><\/b><\/big><\/p>\n

Introduction to Part 1 of the IELTS Writing Test<\/p>\n

The purpose of the first part of the writing test is to assess whether candidates have the ability to describe charts, graphs, tables, and other forms of data. In the UK, most students above university level must write such essays, so for a student planning to study in the UK, this is an essential skill.<\/p>\n

First: Understand graphic information<\/h3>\n

Before writing, first, understand the data in the charts; second, think about how to answer questions and organize them in segments.<\/p>\n

Second: Understand the data in the chart<\/h3>\n

First, find the headings or topics next to the chart or table, so you can roughly understand the content of the graph. Second, find the relationships among the data in the graph. Most data is used to show relationships between two or more groups of data. Usually, this information is written in the title block and title bar. Third, identify the characteristics and trends of the data, such as the trend of fewer and fewer children being born between 2003 and 2004.<\/p>\n

Third: Organize and conceive articles<\/h3>\n

When writing an article, be sure to organize and carefully divide the paragraphs based on your own ideas. The first paragraph is usually an introduction, which describes the basic information of the chart, explains the data to be described, and then provides commentary. The main section of the article should be divided into several paragraphs to describe the information in the chart. The final part is the conclusion, summarizing the data described and explaining the trends you have discovered. Sometimes, the topic requires comments on the reasons or rationales behind the trend, and a good conclusion may add points.<\/p>\n

Writing Test Part Two: Short Essay Writing<\/big><\/span><\/b><\/big><\/p>\n

According to the IELTS test manual, to complete the second part of the writing test for the Academic group, candidates must be able to: 1. Present solutions to problems. 2. Present and defend opinions. 3. Compare opinions, views, and reasoning. 4. Evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence, or arguments. <\/p>\n

First: Analyze and understand the problem<\/h3>\n

Before you start writing, it’s important to truly understand the question the topic asks. Generally, there are two types of essay questions.<\/p>\n

The first type is the debate type, where candidates are required to present both sides of a controversial issue, then present their own opinions. This means you don’t necessarily have to agree with the statement on the issue, but you should first analyze both sides: pros (supporting the statement) and cons (criticizing the argument). In the end, you can present your own opinion.<\/p>\n

The second type is problem-solving, which requires identifying the problem and proposing solutions. These questions ask you to figure out why a phenomenon occurs and the potential consequences and benefits of that phenomenon. At the same time, candidates are also asked to propose solutions to the problem.<\/p>\n

Second: Develop a plan<\/h3>\n

Before writing, you should spend at least five minutes planning, brainstorming, and organizing ideas. Start by listing the main headline, then place some key ideas under the headline.<\/p>\n

Third: Organize the structure of your article<\/h3>\n

An organized article consists of three parts: introduction, the main body of text, and conclusion.<\/p>\n

  1. Introduction The purposes of an introduction include:
    \n (1) to provide an overview of the topic and explain the central idea of the text.
    \n (2) If candidates are asked to give suggestions, the introduction can state the author’s position.
    \n (3) The introduction introduces what the author will state in the main text.<\/li>\n
  2. Main body of text: This text usually provides a further detailed explanation of the ideas raised in the first introduction. The text should be written in paragraphs, with each paragraph beginning with one or two main sentences, which explain the viewpoint of the statement, followed by supporting and detailed explanations.<\/li>\n
  3. Conclusion: Summarize the views expressed by the candidate in this article, and provide a perfect conclusion or express your final personal opinion.<\/big><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    IELTS Oral Speaking<\/span><\/h1>\n

    The IELTS Speaking Conversation Test includes a spoken interview between the candidate and the examiner, lasting about 11 to 15 minutes. The Speaking Conversation Test is divided into three parts:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
    <\/td>\nPart One:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/td>\nConversation with the examiner, during which you answer some general questions, usually about family and daily life <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    <\/td>\nPart Two:<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\nGive a two-minute talk based on the prompt card theme assigned by the examiner <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    <\/td>\nPart Three:<\/span><\/strong><\/td>\n

    Let’s take a closer look at each part and some methods you can prepare:<\/p>\n

    Preparation for the first part<\/h3>\n

    In the first part, the examiner will ask you some general questions about life, family, work, or academics. You can try to anticipate the questions you might be asked and then prepare some vocabulary you might need to answer them. For example, if your brother is an interior designer, you should be sure you know that the English word for interior designer is “interior designer.” You must know the vocabulary needed to talk about your family or life. The examiner will also ask about your interests. For example, what kind of sports do you like or what hobbies you enjoy? Similarly, you need to make sure you have prepared the vocabulary you need. Additionally, you should be able to describe your travels to other countries and your experiences there.<\/p>\n

    Key tip: The examiner expects you to answer these questions in full sentences. Never answer only with YES or NO!!<\/p>\n

    Preparation for the second part<\/h3>\n

    In this part of the quiz, you will be given a small card with a prompt question written on it. The card will look like this:<\/p>\n

    Describe the industrial and economic situation in Taiwan.
    \n You should talk about:
    \nThe good and bad results of industrial development in Taiwan.
    \n The current economic climate in Taiwan.
    \n The future direction for economic and industrial development in Taiwan<\/p>\n

    Next, the examiner will give you one minute to think about how to answer the question. Then, you must give a two-minute presentation on the topic.<\/p>\n

    So, in the example above, you can talk about the wealth and high living standards brought by industrialization. You could also say that pollution is a negative result of industrialization. You can talk about economic depressions and their impact on business investment. You might want to describe the relocation of manufacturing to mainland China, or the future industries of Taiwan’s economy\u2014such as biotechnology or financial services.<\/p>\n

    Secret to success: Using recording\u2014recording yourself in English for two minutes is a great way to practice. Then, you can play your recording and think of other ways to improve your speech.<\/p>\n

    Preparation for the third part<\/h3>\n

    In Part Three, you and the examiner will have more conversations based on the topics of Part Two. These discussions will last 4 to 5 minutes. To prepare for this section, you can practice detailed discussions of topics with others. You can ask your friends, relatives, or teachers to help you.<\/p>\n
